Nick Riewoldt's position as St Kilda's captain for the 2016 season has not been carved in stone, according to coach Alan Richardson.
Richardson, who spoke regarding the matter yesterday, said that Riewoldt's position as captain lies in his hands; it is his for the taking if he so wishes.
"If we think it's time for someone else to come through and to be the captain, then we think that might and could happen", Richardson said.
"We'll make the right call for the footy club with Rooey's blessings."
If Riewoldt was to continue being captain this would be his tenth consecutive year as the leader of St Kilda, and eleventh overall.
Jack Newnes, Maverick Weller, Leigh Montagna, Sean Dempster, Jarryn Geary and David Armitage are all possible replacements if Riewoldt wishes to step down.
Geary and Armitage shared the role as captain in Riewoldt's absence numerous times this season.
Riewoldt has played the most games as captain for St Kilda, a title he has held since overtaking Danny Frawley in late 2014.
