Sam Fisher has been rewarded for his strong late-season form with a new one-year contract.
The Herald Sun’s Mark Robinson broke the news on Twitter, and the club is expected to make a formal announcement at tonight’s Best & Fairest count.
Fisher’s retention for 2015 appeared unlikely earlier this year, as a string of debilitating foot injuries put his career in jeopardy. But after finally returning to the senior side following more than 12 months on the sidelines, Fisher quickly demonstrated his customary poise and elite play-reading abilities. He immediately added experience and guile to the Saints’ besieged backline and showed enough in just seven games to warrant a new deal.
Fisher, who has himself won the Trevor Barker Award twice, also finished this campaign on 198 games. Barring a return of the injury plague, he will notch his 200th game in 2015 and receive automatic life membership with the Saints.
He deserves that.
