As a writer, you sometimes need to go out on a limb. Sadly, the subject matter does not always cooperate, and that's certainly the case today with former Saint Luke Ball announcing his retirement from football.
Of course, yesterday I published an article that suggested the Saints should try to woo Ball back to the club as a player/mentor for the youngsters. But it appears Ball's battered body has put paid to any chance of him playing on next year, with Seven's Mark Stevens suggesting the veteran has been battling a troublesome disc problem for some time.
That's the lot of a writer. You cannot be right all the time, and there are other times where you'll be made to look foolish.
On Ball, as far as I'm concerned, he's welcome back at St Kilda at any time. Let's not forget, he played 142 games with the Saints, but only 80 with Collingwood. So here's hoping he fathers at least three (okay, five) sons.
All the best in retirement, Bally.
